Correspondence, 1916-1919.

A group of letters addressed to Thelma L. Bishop of Elmira, New York from two American soldiers during World War I, Corporal Garwood E. Dains (Co. G, 102nd U. S. Infantry), and Sgt. Henry J. Dube (Hq. Co., 102nd U.S. Infantry). Their letters are generally friendly and personal in content with some discussion of military life. They mentioned the squalled conditions of the trenches along the western front in France, which they experienced first hand. Other interesting discussions concern the gas attack that afflicted Sgt. Dube and the fate of Thelma's brother who was taken prisoner by the Germans. Lastly, their low opinion of German people reflect much of the anti-German propaganda expressed by the U.S. government and other sources during the war.
